What Junk Removal Actually Costs in Placer County

Almost nobody publishes junk removal prices, which is why this page exists. Here is how the pricing actually works in Placer County, what moves the number, and — honestly — when you shouldn’t hire anyone at all.

Volume pricing, explained

Junk removal is sold by truck space, not by weight or by the hour. A standard truck bed is divided up mentally into fractions, and you pay for the fraction your stuff fills:

LoadTypical range
Single item / minimum pickup$95–$150
Quarter truck$150–$250
Half truck$250–$400
Full truckload$450–$650
Whole-house or estate cleanoutQuoted as a job

Those are Lincoln-area numbers for ordinary household material. National franchises operating in Placer County generally sit at the top of those ranges or above, because they’re carrying franchise fees and regional advertising spend that a local operator isn’t.

The important part: the quote comes before the loading. Any company that starts putting things on the truck before you’ve agreed a number is doing it in the wrong order.

What actually moves the price

Not much, and it’s all predictable:

  • Stairs and long carries. A second-floor apartment or a hundred feet from a back gate to the truck is real labour. It should be quoted, not sprung on you.
  • Two-person items. Pianos, safes, gun cabinets, hot tubs, treadmills. Anything one person physically cannot move alone.
  • Materials with their own disposal fees. Mattresses, tyres, appliances containing refrigerant, televisions and other e-waste all cost money to dispose of properly, and that cost is passed through. This is why a “cheap” hauler sometimes isn’t — the ones who quote suspiciously low occasionally solve this problem by dumping.
  • Heavy inert material. Concrete, brick, tile, dirt, roofing. These are priced separately because they’re charged by weight at the facility, and a small pile can outweigh a full truck of furniture.

What does not move the price

  • Mileage inside Placer County. Lincoln to Rocklin, Roseville, Loomis, Auburn — that’s a normal run down Highway 65 and shouldn’t attract a travel fee.
  • How messy it is. Sorting is the job.
  • Whether you helped. You’re welcome to have things stacked by the driveway, and it may reduce the time on site, but the price is the volume either way.

Three times you shouldn’t hire anyone

We would rather tell you this than take a job that wasn’t worth it to you.

1. One or two small items and you own a truck. The WPWMA facility on Athens Avenue takes household loads directly. If you can lift it and you have a way to get it there, a self-haul is cheaper than any service. Check current hours and fees before you drive out.

2. It’s genuinely hazardous. Paint, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, propane tanks, asbestos. No legitimate junk removal company will take these, and one that offers to is a red flag. Placer County runs a household hazardous waste programme for exactly this — it’s the right route and it’s inexpensive.

3. The item is worth more than the haul. Working appliances, decent furniture, tools. A local buy-sell group or a donation pickup gets it out of your house for nothing, and someone gets use out of it. If you’ve got the time to run it to a charity yourself, you keep the value.

Where a service genuinely earns its money

Volume and deadlines. A full garage, a tenant turnover with a re-list date, a hot tub that needs cutting apart, a whole-house clearance after a death, a hoarded property where the sorting is the hard part. Those are jobs where the labour, the truck, the disposal accounts and the sorting knowledge are worth paying for, and where doing it yourself costs you three weekends and a rental.

If you’re not sure which side of that line you’re on, call and describe it. We’ll tell you straight — including when the answer is that you don’t need us.

Prices in detail are on the pricing page, and the Placer County disposal guide covers where each material actually ends up.

Common Questions

Why won't companies quote a price over the phone?

Most will give you a range — we do. What they can't do is commit to a final number without knowing the volume, because volume is what they're selling. A phone estimate based on your description gets you close; the on-site quote before loading is the one that's binding.

Is it cheaper to rent a dumpster?

Sometimes. A dumpster wins when the job runs over several days, when you're doing the labour anyway, and when you have somewhere legal to put it. It loses when you need it gone today, when the load is heavy but small, or when the items need sorting rather than burying.

Do you charge by weight?

No. Volume — how much truck space your load takes. Weight matters at the disposal facility, which is why concrete, dirt, tile and roofing are quoted separately, but for a normal household load you're paying for space.

Are there hidden fees?

There shouldn't be, and there aren't here. The things that legitimately change a price are disclosed before loading: stairs, long carries, items needing two people, and materials with their own disposal fees like mattresses, tyres, appliances containing refrigerant, and e-waste.
